Discover the fascinating Via Claudia Augusta on an unforgettable cycle tour from Augsburg to the lagoon city of Venice. This tour combines spectacular landscapes, cultural highlights and Italian dolce vita. Starting in Augsburg’s local recreation area, you follow the Lech river through the idyllic Lechtal heaths to the gentle hills of the Pfaffenwinkel. After a visit to Lake Forggensee and the Füssen Lech Falls, the route leads into the Tyrolean Alps, where transfers over the steepest passes make the journey easier. From Lake Reschen you cycle along the Adige cycle path through South Tyrol’s fruit and wine landscapes, past Lake Kaltern and on into Trentino. Along the Brenta River and through the Prosecco region, you approach Venice. Historic towns such as Merano, Trento and Treviso line your route until you finally immerse yourself in the Serenissima.

Route

Tour profile / level 2

The route is mostly on paved bike and agricultural roads, as well as side streets and through-roads with little traffic. There are some sections on gravel surfaces. There are about 10 km of busier roads on the route from Feltre to Quarto d’Altino.

Transfer over the Fernpass (Reutte - Fernsteinsee), transfer for the biggest climb up the Reschenpass (Landeck - Nauders) and from the Reschensee to Meran there are some longer downhill sections.

Day 1: Augsburg

Individual arrival in the provincial Roman capital of Augusta Vindelicorum.

Day 2: Augsburg – Landsberg, approx. 50 km

The name of the city of Augsburg goes back to the Roman provincial capital Augusta Vindelicorum, which was founded in 15 BC under Emperor Augustus. However, Augsburg became famous as the “Fugger city”. A visit to the Fuggerei, the oldest social housing in the world still in use today, is almost obligatory. The route to Landsberg is a leisurely one on flat terrain.

Day 3: Landsberg – Schongau region, approx. 45 km

You can already see the Alps on the horizon. But for now, you can still focus all your senses on experiencing the uniquely beautiful landscape of the Pfaffenwinkel region. Schongau awaits you with a picturesque old town and an almost completely preserved city wall.

Day 4: Schongau region – Füssen/Schwangau, approx. 40 km

After saying goodbye to Schongau, the route continues along the Lech towards Tyrol. Before the border with Austria, the “fairytale castle” of Neuschwanstein near Füssen awaits its visitors.

Day 5: Füssen/Schwangau – Imst, approx. 40 km (approx. 70 km without transfer)

The route first leads from Füssen to Reutte. From there, we take you over the Fernpass by a transfer that saves you a lot of effort. From Fernstein Castle, you then cycle via Nassereith through the picturesque Gurgltal valley to Imst. A “beery” experience awaits you at Starkenberg Castle with its traditional private brewery.

Day 6: Imst – Lake Reschensee holiday region & Upper Vinschgau, approx. 55 km (without transfer approx. 105 km)

Well fortified, you first cycle from Imst to the district capital Landeck. From Landeck, an organized transfer takes you to Nauders, where you cross the border into Italy and the main Alpine ridge a little later at the Reschenpass. Past the Reschen reservoir with one of the most famous photo motifs in South Tyrol – the sunken church tower of Altgraun – you cycle downhill towards Mals. Enjoy the first evening in South Tyrol in the old alleys of the town.

Day 7: Lake Reschen holiday region & Upper Vinschgau – Meran, approx. 65 km

Now it is time to cross the entire Vinschgau Valley. The route leads from around 1,200 m above sea level in Burgeis down to 350 m above sea level in Meran. You will often follow the course of the Adige River. From the starting point, this pleasure tour first leads down to Glurns, the smallest town in the Alpine region. Via the marble village of Laas, you will then reach Naturns and finally – passing the striking Kastelbell Castle – the spa town of Meran. Relax here during an evening stroll along the Passer promenade, surrounded by subtropical flora.

Day 8: Meran – Castelfelder holiday region, approx. 50 km

There are many attractions along this route: the famous Schnatterpeck altar in the church of Niederlana, the highest church tower in South Tyrol in Terlan, as well as numerous castles and ruins on both sides of the valley. And – after the opportunity for a short detour to South Tyrol’s capital, Bolzano, Lake Kaltern offers a prime opportunity to cool down any tired legs.

Day 9: Castelfelder holiday region – Trento, approx. 50 km

The route continues along the Adige River through orchards to Salurn, where German-speaking South Tyrol ends. The end of the stage is then in Trento, where you will be greeted by the very beautiful old town with its cathedral and Buonconsiglio Castle.

Day 10: Trento – Feltre, approx. 65 km (without transfer approx. 90 km)

The day begins gently with a transfer to Valsugana, and from Levico Terme you cycle along the very beautiful, newly created cycle path along the Brenta River via Borgo Valsugana to Primolano, where you leave the Brenta cycle path. From there, the route initially leads along a road with a manageable incline uphill for a short distance, and then via Arsie and Fonzaso to the historically significant city of Feltre.

Day 11: Feltre – Pieve di Soligo, approx. 50-60 km

Two possible routes lead to today’s destination: either with only a few shorter climbs (but with more traffic for about 6 km shortly after Feltre) along the famous Prosecco wine-growing areas or a very sporty route via Lentiai and the impressive Praderadego Pass (approx. 900 meters of elevation). In any case, the quiet town of Pieve di Soligo is an ideal place to relax and unwind.

Day 12: Pieve di Soligo – Quarto d’Altino/Venice, approx. 65 km

Once it is still said to pedal until the lagoon city of Venice is reached. And the way there has again to offer real highlights. Soon after Pieve di Soligo, still in the midst of the Prosecco hills, the imposing Castello San Salvatore is enthroned and then after a short, more heavily traveled road section at Ponte Priula, the “art and radicchio city” of Treviso. After the long journey, we welcome you to Quarto d’Altino – a small town very close to the original starting point of the historic Via Claudia Augusta!

Day 13: Excursion to Venice

Your bike has now served you well and so you can take the train to Venice. From there, the countless narrow streets leading to Piazza San Marco can be perfectly explored on foot. Of course, a romantic gondola ride could also follow as a reward for the many kilometers you have cycled...
